Are We Helping Our Children Gain Independence?

I've read opinions from self-advocates who assert individuals with disabilities are not being heard (paraphrasing my interpretation); and I can't say I disagree. Speaking for myself, it's incredibly difficult walking the line between protecting my son and allowing him the freedom to learn how to be a self-sufficient adult.
